Is this recognizable?
- Your team keeps putting out fires, but structural IT problems recur.
- You have too little visibility into the entire process – let alone exactly what vendors are doing.
- Negative feedback from end users often only comes when things are already going wrong.
- Every sprint has to be faster, but the pressure on quality and stability only increases.
- And meanwhile you try to keep the overview and the direction.
You’re not the only one. In virtually every industry, organizations run into this. Themes such as stability, chain governance, collaboration between business and IT, compliance and accelerating software delivery are challenging. There is often no clear approach, and if there is, implementation remains challenging. Even when organizations are aware of these themes, organizing a team to address them (such as a Center of Excellence or IT4IT team) often proves difficult in practice – let alone securing adoption and embedding the process. This is why we have developed a practical model that provides direction and focus: the Observability Maturity Model (OMM).
A growth model for observability
Our model shows you how you can use data step by step to collaborate better between teams, shift gears faster and make more impact. The five levels help you not only implement observability, but also anchor it in your organization.
Within the model we start with ‘Reactive’, in which you mainly act afterwards, and grow via ‘Insight’, ‘Direction’ and ‘Integration’ to ‘Innovation’. In this way you develop observability from separate measurements to an integral part of your way of working.
Reactive – the starting line
You act on incidents, often only when a user reports problems.
Example: The website is slow. A ticket comes in. IT goes searching – with no starting point. The next day, the same thing happens.
Insight – the first step to direction
You create transparency. Together we bring the operation of your IT or process chain into focus, so you can make adjustments earlier.
What do you see emerging?
- Dashboards provide insight into system behavior
- Incidents are spotted faster
- You see initial trends in performance
Taking direction – responsibility
You make service quality measurable. With clear SLOs/KPIs, everyone knows what is expected of them.
What changes?
- Issues are predicted rather than reported
- Teams take ownership based on data
- Improvement becomes a continuous process
Integrate – accelerate and refine
You move performance toward development: automation, CI/CD, and linkage to business goals are prioritized. Typical questions in this phase are: do I solve this now, or is there margin? Can I use automation to speed up my process?
Impact in this fase:
- Development teams immediately see the impact of their work
- Insights become actionable for business decisions
- Human actions are automated wherever possible
Innovate – co-creation in the chain
You work with partners and suppliers based on shared data.
Example: An e-commerce party and warehouse supplier share real-time observability data. They optimize their logistics and avoid delays and frustration – even before they occur.
From ambition to action: this is how we make a difference
Imagine this: you know where you want to go with your organization. The ambition is there, so is the direction – but how do you make sure it doesn’t stop at good intentions?
That starts with choosing a clear route. By positioning your organization within our Observability Maturity Model, together we make tangible next steps visible. Every step we take not only increases the use of data, but also strengthens the involvement of your teams. This creates ownership and progress.
Our approach follows a familiar rhythm. First we determine the goal together: where do you want to be? Then we map out the steps needed to achieve it. With a sharp plan in hand, we execute in a focused way, without unnecessary detours. Finally, we validate the results and improve where necessary. Because we work in short cycles, we can always adjust on the basis of new insights – and thus continuously add value. This is how ambition turns into action. And action into impact.Waar sta jij?
Zo verandert ambitie in actie. En actie in impact.
